Hungary's winemaking revolution is perfectly exemplified by the Monarchia brand. Astor, 12 Astor Place (Lafayette Street), charges $6 for the 2003 Rosé, made from the kekfrankos (Lemberger) grape.
It rivals pink Tavel sipped in August in Avignon, France; a light chill heightens its berry flavors. A blend partly of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, the sturdy 2000 red Egri Cuvée ($13) emphasizes its kekfrankos component the way Bela Bartok's compositions gracefully accent folk melodies.
